I Can't Put My Finger on It

February 18, 2016 Bryan Kim

“The Church’s approach to an intelligent carpenter is usually confined to exhorting him not to be drunk and disorderly in his leisure hours, and to come to church on Sundays. What the Church should be telling him is this: that the very first demand that his religion makes upon him is that he should make good tables. Church by all means… but what use is (Church) if in the very center of his life and occupation he is insulting God with bad carpentry? No crooked table legs or ill-fitting drawers ever, I dare swear, came out of the carpenter’s shop at Nazareth. Nor, if they did, could anyone believe that they were made by the same hand that made Heaven and earth? No piety  in the worker will compensate for work that is not true to itself; for any work that is untrue to its own technique is a living lie…” - Dorothy Sayers

“…here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.”
— Romans 12 / Message Version

Dear PB,
I listened to the Abodah (Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho, It's Off to Work We Go - Numbers Series) message today...
You always remind us that our workplace is where we have so much influence because that's where we spend most of our time and it's so true! A couple of weeks ago, my boss asked to have brunch with me, and I got nervous. But she wanted to tell me that she notices my hard work and patience although she doesn't voice it. (She expressed how she) saw that I was stepping up and taking ownership of my work... And she said that there's something about me and my work ethic that's not ordinary and she can't put her finger on what it is. But appreciates that I am generous and loving to my coworkers and her and her family.
...And I didn't get to say it to her but in my mind I thought, "God is this you? Is she seeing a bit of you in me?"
I realized what it meant to be a blessing at my workplace. Yes, the work I produce is important, but all of that comes naturally when its done with the right heart...
