What Does it Mean to Be Responsible as a Man?
Recently, I had the privilege of sharing at Ekko's Ikon gathering.
Like real men we feasted, we laughed, we enjoyed each others' company.
Like real men we worshipped, we prayed, and we listened to each other's journey.
Like real men we connected.
I was asked to share on the topic of Responsibility. Below are my notes from the talk, I hope it encourages you as you continue to climb that mountain with fellow brothers in the Lord.
Thanks Ikon for a great night.
It means you are a man God can count on.
It means you are somebody that your loved ones can count on.
It means you are able and willing to obey when it counts.
Responsibility = Dependability
What are the Usual Markers of Responsibility in a Man?
- Able to Feed and Resource his Family.
- Able to Protect His Family from Danger.
- Able to Set His Family with a Hopeful Future.
- Able to Shelter His own Family.
- Able to Live a Good Example and Leave a Great Legacy.
Who Did This in the Bible?
Genesis 6 says, “Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless man living on earth at the time. He consistently followed God's will and enjoyed a close relationship with him.”
"Consistently" means beforehand, everyday, not just the day it started to rain.
The secret to Noah’s success in God? = Consistently preparing in his private life.
Scripture says that, “Noah was a godly man; he was blameless... He walked with God.” - v9
What You Do in the Dark
For an example of what responsibility looks like let's watch this video together:
Michael Phelps’ Under Armour Commercial, “Rule Yourself”.
“It’s what you do in the dark, that puts you in the light.”
The problem for many of us is that the “spotlight” is coming to us whether we were aware of it or not via marriage, fatherhood, discipleship, promotions, etc.
You see, what you do when no one is looking, when no one cares to look, when you’re not "important", when you’re not counted on, prepares you to deliver when it counts later.
It’s what you do in private, in the mundane days, that enables you to respond to God with obedience.
